Celebrate Grandparents Day with GoCo

16 Oct, 2017

Picnic on the Lawn

GoCo Community Care is celebrating the role grandparents and older people play in the community with a Grandparents Day get together for residents to connect across generations.

The event, supported by Family and Community Services NSW (FACS), will be held on Sunday, 29 October from 10am to 1pm.

Grandparents, family and friends will be treated to a picnic on the lawn at the Gunnedah Shire Band Hall. Entertainment will be provided by the award-winning Gunnedah Shire Band and We Are One Community Choir; there will also be a free tour and morning tea at Dorothea Mackellar Centre; a tour and lucky door prizes at the Water Tower Museum. A jumping castle and sausage sizzle will also be available.

What is Grandparents Day?

The first ever grandparents Day was celebrated in America in 1978. As a result many countries started celebrated grandparents. Then New South Wales held their first Grandparents’ Day on Sunday 30 October 2011.  It is now celebrated each year on the last Sunday of October.

The purpose of this special day is to “honor grandparents, give them the opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help younger generations become aware of the strength, information and guidance that older people can offer.”

Take this opportunity to appreciate your own grandparents, your children’s grandparents, and all elders who have had an impact on your life. If you know a younger caregiver who is providing assistance to their grandparent, offer some recognition or a helping hand. “It’s a day to spend time with an older loved one and to celebrate what they mean to you and the community.” GoCo Community Transport Co-ordinator Tammy Lumby said.

“The older generation has wonderful stories and memories to share. We invite everyone to take some time out and enjoy a morning out for Grandparents Day.”
